Other Exciting Opportunities in VET

Applecross SHS promotes a range of programs made available to school students in VET and strongly encourages students to come out of their comfort zone and take up some of these opportunities. In applications for VET in Schools courses at TAFE, students are asked if they have ever attended one of these programs, so having this to add in a TAFE application is extremely beneficial.

Try a Trades – Years 9 to 11

Try a Trades is aimed at raising the awareness of trades and industry areas as a viable career option. Over the year, a variety of Try a Trades opportunities are offered by TAFEs and Registered Training Organisations, and students are invited to an interactive program that lets attendees try their hand at various skills, trade areas, and courses. The activities are informative and offer access to some of the basic skills involved within the construction industry. Students also gain invaluable career advice from apprentices, trainers, local employers and industry representatives.

Try-A-Skill – Year 10

Try-A-Skill (TAS) is a wonderful way to give Year 10 students an opportunity to enrol into several units under a Certificate II level qualification which will assist them in gaining experience and exposure to industry. These programs can gauge student ability and interest in applying for future Vocational Education and Training courses. On completion of any delivered Unit of Competency, students will receive a statement of attained results for the achieved units.

Skill Sets – Years 11 and 12

Skill Sets have been designed to engage Year 11 and 12 students in a pathway that provides an opportunity into further training and/or employment. Students who complete a Skill Set gain some units, enabling them to achieve a partial qualification in a particular industry area.

Year 9 Taster Courses

In line with the State Government’s jobs plan and commitment to VET, the Career Taster Program (CTP) was developed to inspire students about potential career and further study opportunities. The CTP aims to support Year 9 students to become ‘career-curious’ and complement the existing career development and taster opportunities already provided by schools and industry. South and North Metro TAFE have a large program of tasters to offer Year 9 students.

All programs are advertised in Connect and at assemblies. Places fill very quickly, so it is recommended that students visit the VET Office as soon as they hear about them.
