Year 7 to 11 students return to school on Tuesday 13th October to commence Term 4.

During the Year 12s final assembly held on Monday 21 September, the winner of the annual Canteen Art Award was announced.  Congratulations to Tim Orange,  who’s multi-media triptych, entitled “Elsewhere”  was selected as this year’s winner.  Each year the Canteen Committee fund the purchase of a Year 12 artwork, so as to build on the already well-established school collection.  A $400 prize is offered to Year 12 Visual Art students. The award is only taken up by the brave who are willing to give up possession of their highly coveted work. Students present their finished production piece to the judging panel, comprised of the Head of ARTS and Canteen Manager, for final selection. Acquired works are hung in prominent places around the school.

“Elsewhere” is a moving and ephemeral work, which uses a range of skills and techniques from drawing, photography and Photoshop enhancement.  Portrait and landscape images, which were taken while on holiday in the United States, have been overlayed and combined with text to create a layered dreamlike image.

Congratulations Tim!

Poetry is a powerful medium for offering comment, insight and appreciation of our world and the way we interact with it. It can move us, make us laugh, make us cry and even offer solace in times of need. Many of us are not comfortable with the concept of poetry and all it entails; at Applecross Senior High School it is time to change.
On Tuesday 22nd September, the entire school will pause for five minutes to give breath to poetry by reading aloud a poem in every class and office. Either students or teachers will take a moment from normal class work to vocalise words on a page and allow language a chance to find its way into the very air.
The spoken word is important. Let us seize this chance and make the walls of Applecross resonate with the power of our language.
