Parents of Year 7 students were eager to attend an afternoon tea held on Monday 29th February. This was an opportunity for them to meet teachers in an informal setting, before Parent/ teacher interviews later in the term.

Learning areas displayed their teaching programs for the year and also samples of work completed by students so far this year.  There were also samples of Design and Technology projects on display.

Parents and students alike were entertained with musical items by a number of the school Music students and tours of the recently completed Year 7 (North) Block were conducted by members of the school Administration. This area is where the majority of Year 7 classes are held.

The Year 8 Student Councillors ably served afternoon tea to both parents and teachers, while the students were treated to an icy pole from the Canteen.

It was a wonderful opportunity to initiate positive communication between Applecross Senior High School and Year 7 parents and is one of the many ways that we foster “Parents as Partners” in their child’s education at Applecross Senior High School.

Our recent Inter-House swimming carnival saw Amity take the crown for the 3rd year in a row. All Year 7 and 8 students attended the carnival and participation rates were very high.  It was great to see so many of them having a go and earning valuable points for their House.

Students in years 9-12 nominated to compete and some great performances were seen on the day.

On March 4th, Professor Peter Reynolds, from the University of Newcastle , England, took some time from his visit to The Academy of Emotion at UWA, to speak with Ms Lake’s Year 12 Literature class about Shakespeare. In an easy, friendly style, his discourse focussed on what attending theatre was like in those times and its importance to the population as entertainment. He provided solid contextual and background material for further investigation during the year, when the class studies The Tempest.

Hi, I am the new Chaplain at Applecross Senior High School. My aim in the coming weeks is to be involved in as many events and class activities and make myself known to parents/guardians and the wider community. If you have any ideas or any other things you would like to talk about, I am here to listen.  I will endeavour to continue with many of the programs that the previous Chaplain developed, such as the mentoring program, whilst also creating some innovative projects. I will be available Wednesday 4th May from 1:30pm at the School’s Open Day.

I have moved from Geraldton, just four hours north of Perth, where I worked at Dongara District High School as a Chaplain. Dongara is a very small school in comparison, as there are around 420 students from Kindergarten to Year 12. My qualification is Bachelor of Social Science with a major of Youth Work, which is where my passion with young people has been developed.

I do love the beach, as I have been raised on a coastal town, I enjoy netball and volleyball, which I aim to get involved whilst living in Perth. I also enjoying watching basketball, I have watched one wildcats game, football (I will save which team is the best for another communication) and tennis.  I also love a range of music, live events and gigs. I am a huge animal lover, so feel free to show pictures of your beloved pets.

Please join us tonight Wednesday 9th March at 7.30pm in the Performing Arts Centre as Mr Tim Stapleton, Teacher in Charge of Music at Applecross SHS will provide you with an overview of the music program for students studying at Applecross in 2016 followed by a brief performance from current Applecross SHS music students.
Mrs Cath Standing, Convenor of the 2015 Music Support Group will then hold the Applecross SHS Music Support Group AGM for 2016.
The Music Support Group is a volunteer organisation which relies on music parents joining up each year to assist our Music Department staff in providing the best possible musical experience for your child.
We have a great team of people every year forming the Music Support Group, however this year many of our volunteers no longer have children studying music and we are therefore in urgent need of new volunteers to fill the various roles on the Music Support Group Committee.

Congratulations to the following students have been elected onto the Year 7 Student Council.

The top academic students from Year 7 2015 met with their Program Coordinator, Ms Jan Michell, last week to form a group that could support each other with maintaining, or improving, their impressive academic record. These 17 students achieved 7 or more A grades, out of a minimum of 9, in Semester 2 last year.

The students were asked to list the strategies that they used to assist in their success, but also what they needed to do this year.

These lists were collated and provided to this select group through their Connect page, giving them insight into how others work, and maybe some strategies that they could try.

Some students also mentioned help that they may need from the staff to assist them during the year.

This group will meet twice per term to chart their progress.
