Bridge Building Challenge

On Friday of Week 3, to wind down after a long week of NAPLAN, the Year 7 Academic Extension Science class took part in a fun STEAM activity called “Bridge Building Challenge”.

The challenge used the students’ knowledge of Physics (forces), which they have been studying this term. They discussed keywords such as weight, gravity, support, balanced and unbalanced forces to plan, design, build and test their bridges.

Although this challenge may sound simple, the only materials the students were allowed to use were paper and paper clips. As well as the time limit of one hour, students were given other constraints, such as a budget for purchasing the materials needed to build their bridge, which meant they had to carefully plan and calculate the overall cost of their materials.

Their bridge had to span a gap of 40cm and be free-standing, while weights were put on top of it to determine which group’s bridge was the strongest of them all. Students worked extremely well in groups and went through processes of trial and error to present their best design. One proud group built a bridge strong enough to support 3kg of weight - walking away with House-points for all group members!
